Dental Hygiene at Loughton Dental Spa

Your dental hygiene is vital to your general health and your appearance.

At Loughton Dental Spa we believe that prevention is better than cure and we want to help you to keep a healthy and attractive smile.

At your hygiene appointments, our hygiene-skilled dentists will provide you with expert advice on the methods and products to use to help you make sure your teeth are really clean and your breath fresh, as well as monitor your baseline hygiene and gum status.

Your improved ‘at home’ oral hygiene routine will be enhanced by regular dental hygiene visits where we will use ultrasonic cleaning at a level to suit you, to reach places you can’t at home and hence notice any dental issues early and advise you.

We can provide a wide range of dental products including some that are not readily available on the high street such as GC tooth mousse which is an innovative product containing a milk protein with calcium and phosphate ions to protect the teeth, neutralise damaging plaque acids, and restore important minerals in your mouth, as well as reducing sensitivity and enhancing the natural flow of saliva.

We also sell a wide variety of interdental cleaning aids, specific use mouthwashes, and children’s toothbrushes.

Our focus is on minimum intervention with maximum positive effect, with the aim to empower you to take responsibility in looking after your own dental health to prevent further invasive dental care in the future.

  • Gum disease (also called periodontal disease or pyorrhoea) is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless you may not know you have it.
Gum disease is common, affecting approximately 80% of the population.
The main cause of gum disease is bacteria found in dental plaque. We’ve all heard of plaque, but did you know it’s a sticky film that constantly forms on the teeth? The bacteria within it create toxins that can irritate the gums causing them to become inflamed, red, swollen, and bleed easily, particularly when brushing. This inflammation is known as gingivitis and can be resolved with effective oral hygiene and scaling.

    Everyone has a different susceptibility to the bacteria in their mouths, factors that contribute to gum disease include ;
    • Smoking
    • Stress
    • Certain medical conditions such as diabetes
    • Certain medications
    • Genetic factors
    • Poor nutrition
    • Certain aspects of general health

If you notice any of the following signs of gum disease, see your dentist immediately:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Bad breath that doesn’t go away
  • Pus between your teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • A change in the fit of partial dentures
